Pip was a female chimpanzee. She was a member of Hananya's Group until her death in 2009.
Biography[]
Early life (2001-2003)[]
Pip was born into Rodney's Group to Rodney and Cherri, who previously had a son together named Seamus. Pip was cared for by her mother for the first weeks of her life. However, Cherri then started to put Pip down and leave her (which she also did to Seamus). Concerned for Pip's safety, the staff had no choice but to remove her from Cherri and she was hand reared by Monkey World's Animal Director Jeremy Keeling, who was also hand rearing Pip's half-brother Ben (who had been rejected at birth by his mother Peggy).
Pip and Ben were later placed in a creche in the inside enclosure of Paddy's Group so they could live among other chimps.
Life in The Chimpanzee Nursery Group (2003-2008)[]
In 2003, Pip and Ben (now two years old) were placed in Monkey World's Chimpanzee Nursery Group and were cared for by the group's dominant female Sally. Pip and Ben were reluctant to join the group's other members in going outside, but eventually did so in 2006.
In 2005, Pip became an aunt after her half-sister Jess gave birth to her and Hananya's son Rodders.
Returning to her birth group and Death (2008-2009)[]
In February 2008, Pip and Ben left the nursery group and rejoined their birth group, which was now led by Hananya following Rodney's death in 2004. Upon meeting Hananya, Pip acted submissive towards him and was accepted into the group and was reunited with Cherri. However due to them being separated for nearly seven years, Cherri did not recognise Pip as her daughter and instead saw her as a random chimp. Despite Hananya not being tolerant towards Ben, he was kept in the group due to his close bond with Pip and was kept separate from Hananya. During another meeting with Hananya, Pip along with her half-brother Arfur and the older females in the group came to Ben's defence when Hananya attacked him again. Because Hananya's behaviour, the group was split into two; one group for Hananya and the other for Pip and Ben.
However in March 2009, Pip received a knee injury whilst play fighting with another chimp. Pip was put into a bedroom in the group's inside enclosure and was given anesthetic. However, Pip became agitated and the adrenaline in her body interfered with the anesthetic, resulting in Pip having to be given more anesthetic.
After Pip finally fell asleep, vet Mike Nathan began to tend to her injury. However, Pip took a bad reaction to the anesthetic and had a heart attack and then passed away, despite Mike Nathan's attempts to save her. Following this, Ben was moved out of Hananya's Group and moved to the Bachelor Chimpanzee Group.

- Pip shared the birth date of Monkey World's founder Jim Cronin (who was 50 years Pip's senior). She also shared the same death date as Cronin, who had died two years prior to Pip in 2007.
